Here at Small but Mighty Writers, we aim to spark a passion for reading and writing and to fan the flames once the spark has caught.
The website was created by Jessica in 2014 as a simple blog where a post every week went out to 20-50 readers. What she was not expecting was the steady stream of comments that started to be sent in by young writers looking for an outlet for their writing. For most, their work had been read by a parent, a teacher, or at a push, a friend. They had no outside knowledge on how to write for a bigger audience, and if they had sought help and guidance, the cost to enter a competition or receive feedback was enough to dampen their spirits.
The first competition welcomed 30 writers and although small in their numbers, their enthusiasm to take any advice to help them better their writing was enough to run another competition.
Now, in 2017, we run a Fiction and a Poetry competition four times a year. In our last competition, we received 150+ entries from around the world, with writers now signing up to receive further feedback on their work.
We work with volunteers, publishers, shops, teachers, bookshops, parents and anyone in between to keep improving the site. We make it our duty to reply to every single email, comment and letter that comes through to us.
We refuse to make writers pay to be inspired, which is why all of our services are completely free and there’s always someone at the other end of an email waiting to help.
The first person you will always speak to is Jessica. She keeps track of the emails, marketing, competition entries, and the feedback service. She’s always looking for an excuse to chat so if you’ve got a question or you just want to say hi, you can use the box below to send your message!
