• Competitions
  • How do I enter the competitions?

Our competition deadlines are the 1st January, 1st April, 1st July and 1st October.

Please send your story or poem to submissions@smallbutmightywriters.com and include your full name, age, and the email address we can contact you on if you win.

  • I’m not from the UK, am I still allowed to enter the competitions?

Yes, of course! We love to see entries from young writers wherever you are in the world.

However, please make sure your entry is written in English.

Also, if the winner of a competition is from outside of the UK, you will receive an Amazon voucher via email instead of a prize pack through the post.

  • I’m the youngest in my category, do I have a chance?

We do not judge on age, only on how much potential your writing shows. We look at the idea behind your story or poem, how it has been structured, and your passion for what you are writing about. These things have nothing to do with age and everything to do with how much you love to write, so don’t worry!

  • I’m not very good at spelling, will this go against me?

The story or poem itself is more important to us than the spelling- that is something we can change, great writing isn’t! If your entry wins and it needs some changes made to it, we will contact you to ask if we can make them before publishing.

  • Do you have any ideas about what I can write about?

You can write about anything you like but it can be difficult to find ideas. Try writing about something you love to do, your favourite place to visit or your pet, we are very open. If you would like some ideas, you can have a look at our advice posts.

  • I didn’t win last time, do I have a chance if I enter again?

Just remember, there are a lot of other people who are in the same boat as you. Not everyone can win at the same time, it’s just up to you to learn from it and try again.

  • English is not my first language, should I still enter?

We get entries from many people whose first language is not English and we try to bear this in mind when we read their entries. When we write, our use of language is of course very important, but it is just as important that our characters have soul and vibrancy and that we have a passion and belief that our story has to be told to the world. If you can capture these things in your writing, it really won’t matter if English is your first language or not.

  • Do I have to keep checking the website to keep updated?

We send out a monthly newsletter which you can sign up to by entering your email on the right hand side of the page where you can see "Sign up to our newsletter".

You will then be kept up to date on our competitions, writing advice, and you can even get your own writing published in the newsletter.

  • Prizes
  • What prizes can we win?

Winner: A bundle of essentials to help you to write your next story or poem, a certificate and your entry will be published on the site.

Runners up: A small prize, certificate and an honourable mention on the site.

All prizes are sent out to you so you will need permission from an adult to send us this information.

  • Submission guidelines
  • Does my story or poem need to have a theme or a subject?

Not at all, you can pick anything you want to write about. Have fun with it!

  • I am a teacher, can I enter all of my pupils?

Yes, we would love that. You can send all of the entries in one joint email to submissions@smallbutmightywriters.com with the entrants' names in the body of the email or within the attachments.

If you would like to receive promotional material from us for your classroom or school, please email us at info@smallbutmightywriters.com and we would be happy to help.

  • I haven’t received an email confirming that you have received my entry?

We have a lot of entries coming through each week so please bear with us. We aim to respond within 1 working day. If you haven’t heard from us after 3 days, please send us a query at info@smallbutmightywriters.com or use the contact form on the Contact us page.

  • I went over the word count, will I be disqualified?

We know how difficult it is to keep within the word count when you get carried away with your writing! We do allow you to go over the word count but no more than 100 words (fiction) or 5 lines (poetry) over please.

Similarly, we do ask for a minimum of 100 words (fiction) or 5 lines (poetry).

  • Am I allowed to enter a story or poem I've entered elsewhere?

Yes that’s fine as long as your story or poem hasn't been published in print (a book, anthology etc.) Please check with us if you are unsure.

  • Should I send my entry in an attachment?

You can send it either in an attachment or in the body of an email.

If you are sending an attachment, please make sure it is in a word document.
